A buyer shortlists a 6-litre air fryer because it appears larger than a competing 5.5-litre model. When the samples arrive, however, the 6-litre basket is narrower, the crisper plate is smaller, and the expected food load does not fit as comfortably.

That does not necessarily mean either supplier gave a misleading figure. The two numbers may simply describe different spaces.

One supplier may calculate volume from the full internal basket dimensions, while another may state a usable-capacity figure that takes the basket shape and crisper plate into account. A dual-zone model may combine two separate baskets. An oven-style model may use the entire internal chamber, even though trays, heating elements and required airflow reduce the space available for food.

The litre figure in a catalogue may therefore help with initial screening, but it is not enough to compare two models.

For the comparison to be meaningful, three questions need to be separated:

  1. What space does the stated capacity describe?
  2. How much usable cooking area does the product provide?
  3. What practical food load can the model handle under the same comparison conditions?

One number can describe several different spaces

Air fryer capacity is not always measured or presented on the same basis.

Advertised capacity

This is the figure shown on a product page, catalogue or gift box. It is part of the commercial product description, but it does not usually explain the measurement method.

An advertised figure may refer to:

  • a removable basket;
  • the complete internal chamber;
  • the combined volume of two zones;
  • a rounded commercial figure;
  • another stated measurement basis.

The published number should be recorded exactly as presented. It should not, however, be treated as a complete technical specification unless its basis is also known.

Basket capacity

For a drawer-style air fryer, the capacity may refer to the basket’s internal volume.

Even then, the nominal volume does not explain everything. Many baskets taper towards the bottom. A crisper plate reduces usable depth, while the upper part of the basket may not be suitable for food if loading it would obstruct the intended airflow or bring the food too close to the heating area.

Consequently, two baskets with similar calculated volumes can offer different cooking surfaces and different practical loading limits.

Cavity capacity

An air fryer oven may be described according to the full internal chamber.

In normal use, however, part of that chamber may be occupied or constrained by:

  • heating elements;
  • fan guards;
  • shelf supports;
  • doors and seals;
  • drip trays;
  • spacing between trays.

Cavity volume therefore does not automatically show how many trays can be used, what size of food will fit or whether air can circulate adequately at the intended load.

Combined dual-zone capacity

A 9-litre dual-zone model may consist of two 4.5-litre baskets rather than one continuous 9-litre cooking space.

That distinction becomes important when the intended use involves a large food item. The combined figure may look substantial, while neither individual basket is wide enough for the buyer’s target application.

A useful comparison records:

  • total advertised capacity;
  • capacity per basket or zone;
  • internal dimensions of each zone;
  • whether the zones are physically separate;
  • whether the zones operate independently.

Capacity, cooking area and product footprint answer different questions

Volume is only one part of the product.

Many foods cook across a surface rather than in a deep stack. French fries, chicken wings and sliced vegetables generally need room for hot air to move around the load. As a result, a wide and relatively shallow basket may perform differently from a narrow and deep basket, even when the litre figures are similar.

Useful measurements include:

  • internal basket length;
  • internal basket width;
  • usable depth above the crisper plate;
  • crisper-plate dimensions;
  • usable cooking surface area;
  • recommended food load.

External dimensions answer another question again.

A large housing may contain extra space for insulation, controls, windows, handles, water tanks or airflow channels. It does not necessarily provide a proportionally larger cooking area.

This distinction affects not only product use but also:

  • countertop fit;
  • retail shelf space;
  • gift-box dimensions;
  • master-carton dimensions;
  • container loading;
  • freight cost.

A model can therefore require more packaging and freight space without providing a comparable increase in usable cooking area.

Ask for the measurement basis

Before treating two capacity claims as comparable, ask the supplier to state:

  • the advertised capacity;
  • the usable basket or cavity capacity;
  • the capacity per zone, where applicable;
  • the internal dimensions;
  • the crisper-plate or tray dimensions;
  • the measurement basis;
  • the recommended food load;
  • the source document for those figures.

The supplier may provide the information through a model-specific specification, drawing, quotation or measurement record.

Where the stated number is a nominal commercial value rather than a measured usable capacity, record the two values separately. They should not be treated as interchangeable.

Where the supplier cannot explain the basis, the capacity figure should remain an open comparison point.

Use a defined food-load comparison

Dimensions and calculated volume still do not show exactly how the product behaves when loaded.

A buyer-defined food-load comparison can help answer questions such as:

  • How many chicken wings can be arranged without excessive overlap?
  • What quantity of fries can be loaded without overfilling the basket?
  • Can the intended reference food fit with the clearances required for normal use?
  • Can both zones of a dual-basket model hold the required portions?
  • How many trays can be used in an oven model without obstructing circulation?

This is not a universal capacity standard. It is a controlled comparison carried out under the same conditions for each shortlisted model.

The comparison should record:

  • food type;
  • food weight;
  • arrangement;
  • programme;
  • temperature;
  • cooking time;
  • any turning or mixing;
  • acceptance criteria.

Without those conditions, practical-load claims from different suppliers may be based on different assumptions.

Capacity should not stand alone in a quotation

A larger capacity figure does not automatically identify the more suitable product.

Before quotations are compared, capacity needs to be reviewed alongside:

  • product format;
  • basket or chamber arrangement;
  • heater and fan configuration;
  • rated power;
  • heating performance under the intended load;
  • control logic;
  • standard accessories;
  • external dimensions;
  • packaging dimensions.

For example, a larger chamber may not provide the expected result if its heating and airflow configuration is not suited to the intended load. By contrast, a smaller but wider basket may be more useful for the buyer’s product position.

Capacity is therefore one part of the product definition, not the definition itself.

This structure prevents a commercial capacity figure from replacing the information required for an actual product comparison.

What public product information can support

A catalogue or public product page can show how a supplier presents the model. It may also show the advertised capacity, product format and some external dimensions.

It may not explain:

  • how the capacity was measured;
  • whether the figure applies to the quoted market version;
  • whether the basket construction has changed;
  • whether accessories reduce usable space;
  • whether similar model numbers use different configurations.

Those points normally require a model-specific quotation, specification, drawing or sample check.

Compare the space, not just the litre figure

A capacity number becomes useful only after its meaning is clear.

Before comparing a 5-litre, 6-litre or 9-litre air fryer, establish:

  • what space was measured;
  • whether separate zones were combined;
  • the internal dimensions;
  • the usable cooking surface;
  • the intended food load;
  • the product format and technical configuration.

Once those details are visible, the comparison is based on the products themselves rather than on catalogue numbers alone.
